Research Projects

Clinical trials can be an exciting way to address a medical problem. Participation allows patients to receive medication that might otherwise not be available through any means, and all office visits and any blood tests or other diagnostic procedures associated with study are provided free of charge. In most cases there is a patient stipend for time and travel reimbursement.  Unlike many clinical trial centers, NervePro is an active neurology practice, and patients are under no pressure to participate in research if they chose not to. Those patients that have been involved in trials are invited to stay in the practice as regular patients once the studies are completed if they wish. The research division of NervePro Medical Corporation has successfully performed studies in headache, painful neuropathy, seizures, Alzheimer's and multi-infarct dementias, myofascial pain, low back pain, insomnia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, TIAs, and strokes. Dr. Cleeremans is the Principal Investigator, and is assisted by experienced research coordinators, Carly Cleeremans and Marilyn Fitzgerald, RN. The direct line to inquire about clinical trials is (949) 753-1570 or e-mail at research@nervepro.com.  NervePro Research is also working with other physicians who work as sub investigators in various medical studies for general medical conditions.

Ongoing Clinical Trials:

Post Herpetic Neuralgia:
This study is evaluating a new and stronger version of topical capsaicin that is applied on the skin for 5 minutes during an office visit.  The skin may develop a sunburn like sensation for a few hours.  The medication depletes local skin sensing pain signals for up to three months after the application.  Unlike most pain studies, participants are not required to reduce existing effective pain measures to participate.

  • Ages: 18 and older
  • Must have had the acute shingles over six months prior
  • Must have stable pain medication regimen.
  • No pregnant or lactating women (or planning a pregnancy during the study)

Alzheimer’s Disease
This study should be starting in mid 2011.  For this study, a new medication class will be tested for its effect on preserving and enhancing memory.  This medication has been effective in animal studies, and works in the histamine receptor system, unlike any other Alzheimer’s medications.   Participants must be taking a stable dose of donepezil (Aricept), and cannot be taking Namenda for the 90 days prior to starting this study.  Side effects have been very low on earlier phase studies on this medication.

Migraine Headache:
NervePro usually has several studies to consider for the treatment of this common but painful condition.  Presently, there is a study on menstrual migraines as well as one evaluating the impairment of work efficiency experienced in migraine headaches.  Both of these studies are presently closed to new enrollments.  When new studies are available, they will be posted behind the migraine button on the home page.

Primary Insomnia
Many people have difficulty falling asleep, or tend to awaken after falling asleep and have trouble returning to sleep.  Newer classes of medications that are less habit forming and safer than older drugs are being developed.  Presently, we are between insomnia studies.

Parkinson's Disease:
People who have had Parkinson’s disease for several years often develop periods where the medication seems to be ineffective during the day.  This is called “off” effect.  The current Parkinson’s study is closed to new enrollment.
